Chingola, Zambia — 3rd November 2025-Mulonga Water Supply and Sanitation Company Limited (MWSC) has embarked on a migration to cashless payments for all its services, marking a major milestone in the Company’s ongoing Business Improvement and Digital Transformation Strategy.
The initiative aims to make it easier, faster, and safer for Customers to pay their water bills and access account information anytime, anywhere. As part of this innovation, MWSC’s Contact Centre number 2012 has now been integrated with a USSD code *2012#, allowing customers to conveniently make payments, check balances, and access service information directly from their mobile phones.
This transformation forms part of the Business Improvement component under the Zambia Water and Sanitation Project (ZWSP), a Government-supported programme implemented to enhance MWSC’s operational efficiency, service delivery, and long-term sustainability.
“The move to a cashless payment system reflects our commitment to customer convenience, transparency, and innovation. We are building a modern utility that delivers not only reliable water and sanitation services but also a seamless and secure customer experience,” said MWSC Managing Director Engineer Ndilakulampa.
Initially, the USSD code *2012# will operate on the Airtel Money platform, with integration to other mobile money networks, including MTN underway to ensure inclusivity for all customers across the Copperbelt towns of Chingola, Chililabombwe, and Mufulira.
MWSC plans to fully transition to cashless payments by January 2026, dedicating the final quarter of 2025 to customer sensitization, system testing, and user support to guarantee a smooth and successful rollout.
The Company has since encouraged all customers to embrace the new platform, emphasizing its security, convenience, and alignment with modern digital practices within Zambia’s water and sanitation sector where several Commercial Utilities are adopting similar systems to enhance service delivery.
“We urge our customers to take advantage of this innovation, which eliminates the need to queue or handle cash, offering a safer and more efficient way to interact with Mulonga Water,” added Eng. Ndilakulampa
Through this digital transformation, MWSC continues to reaffirm its dedication to innovation, accountability, and customer satisfaction, ensuring that every step contributes towards the realization of a smarter, more responsive Commercial Utility.
