Government Disburses K10.8 Million to Mulonga Water Supply and Sanitation Company for Project Implementation
Lusaka, Zambia – 3rd November 2025 – The Government of the Republic of Zambia, through the Ministry of Water Development and Sanitation (MWDS), has disbursed K10.8 million to Mulonga Water Supply and Sanitation Company Limited (MWSC) as part of the counterpart funding for the Zambia Water and Sanitation Project (ZWSP).
Minister of Water Development and Sanitation, Hon. Eng. Collins Nzovu, MP, stated that the disbursement underscores Government’s continued commitment to expanding access to clean and safe water, as well as improved sanitation services across the country. The funding also reaffirms the Ministry’s dedication to supporting commercial utilities in delivering sustainable and reliable services to all citizens.
The ZWSP, now in its final phase of implementation, is set to benefit over 600,000 residents in Chingola, Chililabombwe, and Mufulira. The project is expected to be substantially completed by the first quarter of 2026, with overall progress currently exceeding 95 percent.
Hon. Nzovu expressed satisfaction with the remarkable progress achieved by MWSC. He noted that two of the four newly constructed reservoirs are already operational, while the remaining two are over 90 percent complete. Furthermore, the new Chingola Water Treatment Plant stream is scheduled to commence assisted operations in November 2025, marking a significant milestone that will greatly enhance the reliability of water supply in Chingola and surrounding areas.
The Minister further highlighted that under the rehabilitation component of the project, five out of seven targeted water installations have been completed and are awaiting electrical connection. Meanwhile, 81 kilometers of the planned 83-kilometer bulk transmission line have been laid. These combined efforts, he said, will strengthen water supply capacity, improve operational efficiency, and enhance system resilience across the service areas.
Hon. Nzovu urged MWSC to exercise prudence, transparency, and accountability in the utilization of public funds, emphasizing that the ultimate goal is to ensure that communities benefit from these critical infrastructure investments as soon as possible.
He reaffirmed Government’s unwavering commitment to providing sustainable water and sanitation services to all Zambians, noting that such investments safeguard public health, uphold human dignity, and contribute to the nation’s socio-economic development.
The Minister commended Mulonga Water Supply and Sanitation Company for its commendable progress and assured the company of the Ministry’s continued support toward the successful completion and full operation of the Zambia Water and Sanitation Project.
