Government Commends Mulonga Water Supply and Sanitation Company for Restoring Water Supply to Konkola Township
Lusaka, Zambia – 1st April 2026 – The Minister of Water Development and Sanitation, Hon. Eng. Collins Nzovu, has commended the Mulonga Water Supply and Sanitation Company (MWSC) for successfully completing a rehabilitation and pump replacement project in Konkola Township, Chililabombwe, which has restored water supply to Konkola B Section and significantly improved access for residents.
The rehabilitation works involved the replacement of obsolete pumps and the installation of modern pumping equipment, alongside associated electrical infrastructure, at a total cost of over one million, one hundred and twenty-seven thousand Euros (€1,127,191.59). The intervention is currently benefiting an estimated 6,000 residents in the affected section of Konkola Township.
The Minister noted that the works form part of the broader Zambia Water and Sanitation Project (ZWSP), under which MWSC is rehabilitating and upgrading water and sanitation infrastructure in Chingola, Chililabombwe, and Mufulira.
Hon. Nzovu further stated that Government is aware that Section B of Konkola Township experienced significant water supply challenges following a pump failure on 24th January 2026. During the rehabilitation period, water supply operations relied on a smaller pump, resulting in inconsistent water distribution, particularly in Section B.
The successful installation of new pumps and associated electrical infrastructure at both the Konkola Water Treatment Plant and the Mingomba Raw Water Pump Station has now stabilised water distribution and restored reliable supply to affected households. This achievement underscores Government’s continued commitment to strengthening water security and improving service delivery to citizens.
The rehabilitation works are part of ongoing national efforts to enhance infrastructure resilience, improve operational efficiency, and ensure sustainable access to safe and clean water.
The Minister has further urged Mulonga Water Supply and Sanitation Company to maintain prompt technical responses, enhance efficiency in project execution, and remain steadfast in improving customer service delivery. The restored infrastructure is expected to provide a more stable, efficient, and equitable water supply system for the Konkola community.
The Ministry reaffirms its commitment to working closely with water utility companies to ensure the provision of sustainable water and sanitation services across the country, in line with national development priorities.
