Use of raw sewer disappoints Civic leader

A civic leader in Mufulira has bemoaned the increasing tendency by the community to use raw sewer to fertilize their gardens a practice which might hasten the spread of cholera.

Bufuke Ward Councilor Angel Musakula was speaking when he toured some sections in Butondo Township for an on spot check with Mulonga Water Supply and Sanitation Company Limited (MWSC) officials.

Mr. Musakula said that it was dangerous for the community to deliberately block MWSC sewer lines and use the untreated effluent to fertilize their gardens especially with the current cholera outbreak in the country.

He called upon the community to take a leading role in sensitizations against the practice which was endangering the lives of people.

“It is unfortunate to have such a scenario especially with the current cholera situation in our Country, as area councilor I will take up the issue and work with MWSC to ensure that we sensitize our people,” he said.

MWSC has intensified community engagements on the causes of sewer blockages and how the community and local leaders can help prevent the problem.
